Common Approval Pathways

When a department brings a request to the ISC, we review the situation and recommend solutions that balance the department’s needs with compliance, risk management, and equity. On this page are some of the most common outcomes.

For Staff Working Abroad

Short-Term Remote Work Approval

  • Employees may work abroad for a limited period (e.g., 30–90 days), provided risks are manageable and travel safety policies are followed.

Remote Work with Conditions

  • Approval may be granted if the employee and department agree to specific conditions, such as limiting work hours to local law requirements or scheduling an evaluation period.

Alternative Arrangements

  • In some cases, the ISC may recommend adjusting the work arrangement or providing additional parameters to ensure compliance with relevant laws or risk mitigation.

For Independent Contractors

Contract Modifications

  • Contracts may need to be adjusted to align with local requirements or Dartmouth’s standards (e.g., insurance, confidentiality, data security).

Additional Contract Language

  • The ISC may suggest adding language to address specifics of the request that may otherwise be overlooked.

Why These Solutions Matter

These recommendations allow departments to move forward with important work while:

  • Maintaining compliance with U.S. and host-country laws
  • Managing financial and reputational risks
  • Ensuring equity and fair treatment for employees and contractors
