Professional Employer Organization (PEO) Transitions

In some cases, employing staff abroad requires partnering with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), such as Mauve Group. In these arrangements, the PEO becomes the legal employer while the individual continues their work for Dartmouth.

What to Expect

  • Cost Structure:
PEO proposals typically include salary, employer burden (payroll taxes), and a monthly fee. Additional costs may include setup charges, deposits, and other legal fees that may be accrued.
  • Compensation & Benefits:
Salary is set in local currency and may be adjusted for cost-of-living. Dartmouth benefits do not apply; instead, benefits will be offered through the PEO in accordance with host country requirements.
  • Compliance Considerations:
Departments must account for contract length (no “at-will” employment in many countries), local leave entitlements, and work-time limitations.
  • Budget Impacts:
Departments should plan for onboarding fees, mandatory employer contributions, Mauve’s monthly fee, and contingency costs such as currency shifts, severance obligations, or local legal fees.
  • Equity & Flexible Work:
Departments must evaluate how flexible work arrangements affect colleagues, meetings, and equity across the team.

Department Responsibilities

  • Complete a Flexible Work Suitability Assessment
  • Consult with OSP for grant compliance issues
  • Budget for both one-time and ongoing costs

The ISC will guide departments through the transition process and coordinate with leadership on institutional decisions.
